Degus need your time as they need to be let out daily to get the exercise they need. You must be in the room with them while they run around to supervise them and play with them. If you have the time but work late, remember degus are diurnal and sleep at night (but have been known to adjust to nocturnal patterns). If you are too busy yourself or there's no one around to give them the time they need, degus probably aren't for you.

Degutopia is the best place to be to find out about degus before you get them. Don't assume you know the basics, as a mistake could result in harming your degus. It's best to check it out first. Unless your friend keeps degus or is a veterinarian, always check any information they give you yourself. If you just enjoy quizzes, carry on!!

Degus can't be kept outside, it's too cold in the UK. A hamster cage is probably not going to be suitable as not only is it likely to be too small but will probably have a plastic base which degus can chew through. It's not recommended to build your own cage (unless you've done it before) as it may not be suitable and remember it CAN'T be made from wood as degus love chewing. A large purpose bought metal cage is perfect.

You should check that the shops you can get to sell the essentials degus need regularly like sawdust, guinea pig food, fresh veg and hay. Ordering things online is fine for non-essentials, but your degus won't wait 6-8weeks for their food to arrive! You must never buy 'whatever' without checking its safe for degus first, and if you can't buy essentials easily it's not a good idea to keep degus.

If you live in a house full of cats, keeping degus is not a good idea for obvious reasons! However, if you do have a cat, keeping degus is fine as long as the cat is kept away from the cage. If you have a lot of pets, its more than likely you don't have the time to dedicate to playing with your degus that they need. If you've never had a pet, you may not have taken into consideration all the care pets need. Try 'borrowing' a pet from a friend for a few days to try it out before you get degus. Ideally, you will have experience in pet ownership and know you have the time and resources your degus need.
